Editorial policy

This page explains how a shortcut gets onto Shortivo, what the markers on each record mean, and the rules that are never broken. It is here so you can judge the catalog rather than take it on trust.

Where records come from

Every record starts from an official source: the vendor own documentation, help centre or published keyboard reference. The page it came from is named on the record, with a link, so you can check it yourself.

Nothing is taken from a blog post, a forum answer, a video or another shortcut site. Those are often right, but they cannot be cited as a source.

What the markers mean

• Documentation checked. An official page states this combination, and the record carries the date that page was read.
• Not yet source checked. The combination was transcribed from a published reference, but no review has been recorded, so the record carries no date at all. An empty date is the honest value when no review has happened.

There is no third marker. No record on this site claims to have been run inside its application, because that testing has not been done.

Rules that are never broken

• A shortcut is never invented. If a source does not state it, it is not published.
• A Mac combination is never guessed from a Windows one. Swapping Ctrl for Command is wrong often enough to matter, so where a vendor publishes only one column, only that column is published here.
• Where a vendor documents an unusual value, that value is kept, even when it looks like a mistake. The documentation is the source, not our expectation of it.
• A documentation review is never described as a test inside the application.
• Partial coverage is labelled partial. Operating systems, versions and environments that have not been checked are listed as not covered rather than left implied.
• Where two sources disagree, the record is held back and marked as a conflict rather than published with a guess.

How a record is structured

A record separates four things: what the source said, the action the user wants to perform, the key combination itself, and the scope it applies to. Scope means the operating system, the application environment and the version the combination was documented for. That separation is why the site can show you the right answer for your setup instead of a blended one.

Corrections

Anyone can report a record that is wrong, using the correction form or by writing to support@shortivo.net. Reports go to a private queue and are checked against the source before anything changes. Nothing a reader submits is published automatically.

When a record is corrected, its review date is updated to the date the source was read again.

Reviews

Records are re-read on a schedule, and records that have gone past that interval are flagged for review inside the dashboard. A record that has drifted out of date is not quietly left alone.

Advertising and independence

Advertising pays for this site. Advertisements are served by a third party network and are not chosen by us. No advertiser sees the catalog before it is published and no advertiser can change what it says.
